Admission Process Beyond CAT: What Lies in Store?

A student does well in Common Admission Test, or CAT-only marks the initial step to gaining entry into one of India's best management schools-the IIMs. Immediately after the declaration of CAT results, the admissions process unfolds into different stages where candidates' entire profile, their communication skills, and ability to cope up with the requirements of a management program get assessed

 .

  1. Shortlisting

Short listing for each IIM as well as other top Business Schools, has its cut off list. Though scores in CAT form the bedrock for short listing; performance at academics, working experience and other diversity factor like gender, and Academic background have a role too.

  • CAT scores increase probabilities of chances but there is no certainty as it depends on Holistic assessment of the applicants

  1. Personal Interview

Most IIMs and B-schools evaluate the communication skills, thought clarity, and applicant views about current affairs or social issues through a Group Discussion or a Written Ability Test.

  • In this GD, participation has to be in a group where thinking has to be very sharp, whereas WAT checks for writing expression, coherence, and ability to present arguments.

  1. Personal Interview (PI)

This is the PI level, personality, motivation, career goals, and suitability to the program. There might be some questions asked by the interviewer regarding work experience, academics, hobbies, and why any candidate would like to do an MBA.

  • At this level, much better insight is gained regarding the interpersonal skills of a candidate and his preparedness for the challenges in the management program.

  1. Final Composite Score

Last but not the least, the composite score is generated by using CAT scores, academic background, work experience, GD/WAT and PI performance. These scores then decide which candidates would be offered in each school as the weightages assigned to every school is taken into consideration.

Conclusion

Success beyond CAT requires well-balanced profile, great communication skills, and effective preparation for the GD/WAT and PI rounds as each single aspect plays a crucial role to get hold of a seat in the school.
